FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long will it take me to become an actor?

It takes a lifetime to become an actor, but your training will take at least a year.  There are dedicated actors who continue to attend every class taught by Ms.Vozoff even though they finished their formal training years ago.

How do writers and directors benefit from your classes?

The classes are based on the Method's principles of finding the objective, identifying the problem and taking action, action, action. Writers will learn the importance of action versus counter-action. Directors will learn the actors process in order to give specific guidance.

What is the Chair exercise?

The Chair exercise is the first exercise that the actor does. You sit on the stage under the lights and are asked to remember a chair, a specific place where you feel entirely free to be yourself. What is in front of you? What do you see? What do you hear? Then you are asked to bring to mind an important moment in your life--a moment that changed your life. Again, what is in front of you? What do you see? What do you hear? The purpose is to begin giving you a sense of truth and naturalness on stage. The exercise teaches the beginner that genuine feeling cannot be demanded but it can be lured from the unconscious via conscious technique.

What is Super Objective?

Super Objective is the overall objective of a character.  It is your through-line. Sometimes, you do not find it until after the play is closed, and suddenly in the middle of the night you might awaken and say, "Now I see -- I wanted control, vindication, revenge" (or any other number of possibilities). Of course, you will have hopefully found the Super Objective by knowing the objective in individual scenes -- but not always.

What is the Alexander Technique?

    F. Matthias Alexander is credited with the method of channeling energy and muscle relaxation used by performers, athletes and musicians to perform with grace and purpose. Alexander authored The Use of the Self, published in 1932.

Is everyone accepted as a student?

No, but you don't know until you try. If you are over 18 years old, please e-mail us your name, address and phone number to arrange for an in-person interview or call us at (310) 839-9771.

How can I get a copy of your book Changing Circumstances: An Acting Manual with 24 Scenes?

Amazon.com has copies as does the Samuel French Bookstore in Los Angeles (Telephone 213-876-0570). Or you can pick up a copy at the Theatre Group Studio (Please call first.). The price is $9.95 plus tax.

Who is Eleonora Duse?

The late, great Eleonora Duse was an Italian actress who embodied the character of a play. Her process has not been duplicated nor even defined, but she continues to inspire all Method actors.

Harold Clurman and Jack Garfein

Who are Harold Clurman and Jack Garfein?

The founder of Group Theatre in the 1930's,  Clurman was a director, writer and all-around "man of the theatre". One of his famous quotes was "The first law of the theatre is Action. The second law of the theatre is Action. The third law of the theatre is Action. Action. Acting. Actor. Action."

Jack Garfein is a director in both theatre and film, a teacher par excellence and "Maestro" to those fortunate enough to have studied with him. He was the force behind The Actors and Directors Lab in both Los Angeles and New York as well as the artistic director of The Harold Clurman Theatre in New York. He now lives and teaches in Paris.
